Kumbakonam kadappa

Kumbakonam kadappa - This is a popular side dish for idli and disa in South Tamil Nadu. The recipe of this was given to me by my Dean sir, and I thought why not give a try. It has a taste like stew and is a little bland. But when you want a different side dish for idli or dosa instead of the regular chutney or sambar, you can try this.
Ingredients
To preassur cook
Moog dal/green gram dal - 1/4 cup
Potato - 2 medium
Kabool Chana - a fistful (optional, I have used the brown channa)
Turmeric powder - a pinch
For grinding
Coconut - 4 tbsp
Green chillies - 3 you can use more to make it spicy
Garlic - 4 to 5 cloves
Cinnamon - a small bit
Cardamom - 2
Saunf seeds - 2 tsp
Other ingredients
Onion - 1 medium finely chopped
Oil - 3 tbsp
Salt for taste
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Method
In a pressure cooker, take green gram dal (washed properly) and a fistful of channa. Cut 2 medium sized potatoes and add to it. Add a pinch of turmeric powder and salt. Allow it to boil for 1 whistle. Once the pressure is gone, peel the potatoes. Mash the whole mix.
In the meanwhile prepare the ground mix. In a blender take grated coconut, garlic cloves, chopped green chillies, cardamom and cinnamon. Grind it into fine paste.
Take a kadai with oil. Add the mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Add the chopped onions to it and saute till golden brown. Now add the ground mix and cook it in medium flame till the raw smell goes. It will take about 4 to 5 minutes. Once the raw smell goes, add the mashed mix of green gram dal, channa and potatoes. Add salt for taste and water to adjust the consistency. Bring it to boil and switch off the flame. You can add chopped coriander leaves and curry leaves.
