Udupi saaru (tomato saaru)

Udupi saaru (rasam)
Saaru or rasam is a very famous recipe from the south. It combines lots of flavor and is very appetising. In udupi side it is served first along with rice. This saaru is served in Sri Krishna temple of udupi

Tomatoes - 2 - 3 medium sized
Green chilli - 3 slit vertically
Toor dal -. 1/2 cup boiled and mashed
Tamarind - a small lemon sized
Jaggery - small piece
Salt - for taste
For saaru powder
Coriander seeds -3 tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp
Jeera - 2 tsp
Kadale bele - 1 tsp
Red chilli - 5 to 6
Grated coconut - 5 to 8 tsp (you can use kobbari)
Method
First roast all the ingredients mentioned under For saaru puri with 3 - 4 tsp of coconut oil. (You have to dry roast seperately if you are making in large quantities). Allow it to cool and powder it using mixie.
Put tamarind in water to make it into paste
In a vessel take 2 tsp of coconut oil, add 1 tsp of mustard seeds. Add the cut tomatoes. Boil them till it is mashed and releases its juices. Add the green chilli and the tamarind paste. Now add the jaggery and saaru powder. Add water and salt to taste. When it comes to a boil add the mashed dal. Allow it to boil for 5 min. Add chopped coriander leaves and curry leaves. serve hot with rice.
